The day of Sant Jordi
April 23 is a very important date for Catalonia, which dresses up as a party and tradition. The streets are filled with red roses and books to celebrate Sant Jordi . A custom that has been going on since 1456, and which is celebrated by going out into the street and walking through the different stands selling roses and books, together with family, friends, a partner and the little ones in the house.
But do you know his legend? Today we want to tell you where this tradition of giving a red rose and a book comes from.
The legend of Sant Jordi:
The legend of Sant Jordi tells that in the second century in the Villa de Montblanc (Tarragona), there was a very ferocious dragon that fed on the town's cattle. When it wiped out all the cattle, it began to eat its inhabitants. The inhabitants of the Villa were terrified, and they made a lottery to find out whose turn it was to sacrifice themselves. One day it was the turn of the princess of the town, and the legend tells that just as she was going to be sacrificed, a knight dressed in white, Sant Jordi, stood in her way and fought against the dragon. The knight pierced the dragon with his sword and from its blood a rose bush full of red roses was born. Sant Jordi cut a rose and gave it to the princess.
